Dusty Road @ Diablo's

Dusty Road Saturday 29th September 2018 - Diablo's SA1 Dusty Road is an established country music duo on the South Wales music scene Laura Jayne from Swansea and Daniel James from Port Talbot, have been  performing together as Dusty Road for some time now. Both have perfectly pitched singing voices for country music, Dan is a great musician, playing keyboard and guitar and Laura Jane supports the musical input with percussion and also occasionally plays guitar.  They are so comfortable with each other that they regularly interact with the audience during their set and don’t miss a beat musically.
Country music is their forte, but are very adept at adjusting their set list to their audience and happy to play request, if possible. In my opinion Laura's voice is like a blend between that of Eva Cassidy and Annie Lennox, while Daniel's voice is similar to the likes of Ed Sheeran and George Ezra.

Because to the late summer sunshine, at the request of Diablos management I saw probably one of the last Dusty Road performances outside during 2018. After a momentary technical setback whilst setting up the equipment, Laura and Dan began performing to a mostly male dominated audience.  Sadly Laura had to put up with some big rotund-bellied buffoon, who had clearly had too much to drink, trying to impress his mates with his bad dancing and singing. Every now and again, this wally tried to lean towards Laura's microphone in an attempt to sing a single word. However, despite all this both Laura and Daniel remained professional, ignoring this intoxicated idiot and delivering a great performance. Even after they finished singing the dynamic duo laughed it off, asking if the gentleman's carer would please come and collect him.
Diablo's always attracts a good crowd
The Sun is shining and thee musics playing

Dusty Road rocking out in the sunshine

Dusty Road always gets people up and dancing

As I was saying both Laura and Daniel perform a variety of country hits such as, Country Road, Need You Now and Honey I'm Home, but this gig wasn't entirely all country music, some of the other songs they performed on the day included -
·       Lady Antebellum - Need you now
·       The Corrs - Breathless
·       James Blunt - Bonfire heart
·       Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere
·       Ed Sheeran - Castle on the hill
·       David Gray - Babylon
·       Cool & the gang - Celebration
·       Abba - Dancing queen (request)
·       Tina Turner - Rolling on the river
·       Mel C & Bryan Adams - When you're gone

Dusty Road have a number of songs they perform regularly so  they have pretty much perfected them and perform practically flawlessly. However recently they have added a few new songs to their set lists and its making for additional enjoyment from regular followers. During the gig at Diablo's they were asked to perform the hit Abba’s Dancing Queen, safe to say Daniel wasn't keen on performing that one. But after some persuasion from the crowd, they decided to give it a shot. For a song Dusty Road hasn't performed in the past, they made a great effort, even with a little mix up of the lyrics part way through but all credit to them for keeping the audience happy.

During the second half of the gig, the sun disappeared and the wind became stronger, however the spirits of everyone in attendance were kept up with an equally high quality second half, so much so that a brave few got up to dance. During the gig Laura and Daniel noticed that someone was celebrating a birthday and lead everyone in a rendition of happy birthday, after which they decided to spontaneously sing Kool & the Gang's hit celebration.
Laura and Daniel are not just a great duo, they are lovely people and I would urge anyone to go and see one of their gigs, they have a Facebook page where you can follow all their goings on and upcoming gigs, you can also visit their website to purchase gig tickets and their recent album.
Diablo’s is also one of the best places in Swansea to go and see some great local live bands and performers. Bleddyn and the rest of the staff will give you a warm welcome and treat you like a regular, the moment you walk through the door.

Bronwen Lewis @ The Rock & Fountain

On Friday the 21st of September I went to the Rock Fountain pub in Newton Mumbles. Performing there that evening was Bronwen Lewis, a local singer whose gigs I've attended previously. Bronwen is a very passionate Welsh performer who displays this during her gigs. She's a big fan of country music, like myself, often incorporating some classic country tunes into her set list. However, if you’re in the mood for something a little different, she will happily oblige and play requests, if she has the backing music. Like most local performers Bronwen has a number of hit songs she likes to play, including; Alanis Morisette - Ironic  Bob Dylan - Make you feel my love Counting crows - Big yellow taxi 4 non-blondes - What's up John Denver - Country road. During the evening there was only small crowd, with an even split of people in their 20's - 30's and middle aged. The Rock and Fountain does not serve food, but it is definitely dog friendly a...

Bullfrogs croke @ Mary Dillwyn

The Bullfrogs played at the Mary Dilwyn in Fforestfach on Saturday 24 th November.  I arrived 45 minutes ahead of the scheduled 8:45 start time and was amazed to see the band had already arrived set up and waiting to go on. The venue was really busy when I arrived full with people finishing up their evening meals. The Bullfrogs were made up of three men of mature years, playing lead guitar/ lead vocals, bass guitarist/ backing vocals and a drummer.   After a very quick sound check, the Bullfrogs jumped into their first song and I was not impressed at all.  Having first checked the band's Facebook page, I was expecting a rock cover band who wanted to entertain the mixed audiences anticipated to be in a venue like the Mary Dilwyn with well-known covers, but instead, although reasonably talented musicians they seemed to be doing a gig with a playlist to please themselves and a lead singer who, unfortunately, nobody had told couldn't sing.     The ...

No Direction @ The Wig & Pen Swansea

On a rainy Saturday night I went along to the Wig & Pen in Swansea to see a band perform called ‘No Direction’. I knew very little about this band and wasn't sure what to expect so I eagerly looked at their “About” section on their Facebook page and found only “ No Direction are a Swansea based 4 piece covers band with a set list to suit any venue or occasion ”. Besides that woeful insight I did a little more searching and my expectation was a rock band playing cover versions of hit music.   On the evening there was a mixed crowd of people of varied age, from as young as 18 to couple of patrons in their mid 70's.   After a quick sound-check, the gig commenced at 9:15 rather than the advertised 9pm, after the band arrived somewhat drenched from the torrential showers of the evening.   No Direction performing Buffalo Springfield For What It's Worth No Direction performing The Foo Fighters hit Talk About It They started with...
