Nat_Pack @ Pearls Coffee Shop

I went along to Pearls Coffee Shop on Walters Road to see Natalie Jones play a gig. After speaking with owners Mike and Lucy, I understood this was the first non-themed live music evening. So rather than booking live music for Valentines day, St Patrick's day or Beaujolais day, they wanted to make a start to what will be a regular live music Friday evenings. 

Unfortunately, I arrived at 6pm for the published 7pm gig start time, but soon found out this wasn't the case after speaking with Natalie who was told it was an 8pm start time. Like anywhere trying to start a regular event it’s understandable for there to be a few hiccups. However, this wasn't a major issue as Natalie set up and got started in a matter of minutes.
Natalie’s play list of regular cover songs was expanded with new material which had the enthusiastic audience singing along. Natalie was even kind enough to play a few of the requests I threw her way. A sample of songs she played on the evening included;

Pearl’s has a rustic barn style vibe which perfectly suited Natalie’s relaxed countryesque style. It wasn't long before everyone in the Shop were up and dancing. If Pearl’s continues to book great acts like Natalie ‘Nat_Pack’ Jones I can see them soon becoming one of Swansea's successful  live music venues.  As was the case of Natalie’s style suiting the venue, it would also make a perfect  stage for other local ‘country’artists like Eleri Angharad, Marcus Gumms and Dusty Road.

Bronwen Lewis @ The Rock & Fountain

On Friday the 21st of September I went to the Rock Fountain pub in Newton Mumbles. Performing there that evening was Bronwen Lewis, a local singer whose gigs I've attended previously. Bronwen is a very passionate Welsh performer who displays this during her gigs. She's a big fan of country music, like myself, often incorporating some classic country tunes into her set list. However, if you’re in the mood for something a little different, she will happily oblige and play requests, if she has the backing music. Bullfrogs croke @ Mary Dillwyn

The Bullfrogs played at the Mary Dilwyn in Fforestfach on Saturday 24 th November.  I arrived 45 minutes ahead of the scheduled 8:45 start time and was amazed to see the band had already arrived set up and waiting to go on. The venue was really busy when I arrived full with people finishing up their evening meals. The Bullfrogs were made up of three men of mature years, playing lead guitar/ lead vocals, bass guitarist/ backing vocals and a drummer.   After a very quick sound check, the Bullfrogs jumped into their first song and I was not impressed at all.  Having first checked the band's Facebook page, I was expecting a rock cover band who wanted to entertain the mixed audiences anticipated to be in a venue like the Mary Dilwyn with well-known covers, but instead, although reasonably talented musicians they seemed to be doing a gig with a playlist to please themselves and a lead singer who, unfortunately, nobody had told couldn't sing.     The ...

No Direction @ The Wig & Pen Swansea

On a rainy Saturday night I went along to the Wig & Pen in Swansea to see a band perform called ‘No Direction’. I knew very little about this band and wasn't sure what to expect so I eagerly looked at their “About” section on their Facebook page and found only “ No Direction are a Swansea based 4 piece covers band with a set list to suit any venue or occasion ”. Besides that woeful insight I did a little more searching and my expectation was a rock band playing cover versions of hit music.   On the evening there was a mixed crowd of people of varied age, from as young as 18 to couple of patrons in their mid 70's.   After a quick sound-check, the gig commenced at 9:15 rather than the advertised 9pm, after the band arrived somewhat drenched from the torrential showers of the evening.   No Direction performing Buffalo Springfield For What It's Worth No Direction performing The Foo Fighters hit Talk About It They started with...
